Pyrrhosoma nymphula is one of the most common and widespread damselflies in Britain, extending from the south coast of England as far north as Orkney, and has been extensively studied, including a three-year study at a site on Skipwith Common in Yorkshire. In most observations the female was contact guarded by a male while she laid her eggs, and while partial submergence of the female was normal, no instance of complete submergence was recorded.

The female is now completely submerged
